Guatemala Mission Trip Guidelines

This document provides essential information for those participating in a mission trip to Guatemala. Please read carefully and ensure that you are prepared and aware of the guidelines and expectations.

1. Money & Financial Guidelines

  • Debit Cards Only: Please bring a debit card instead of exchanging money. ATMs are available for cash withdrawals.

  • No Financial Promises: Do not make financial promises to locals unless you are certain you can fulfill them. Always consult Kyle Ewald, Director of the Forgotten People, before making any financial commitments.

2. Health & Safety Precautions

  • Vaccinations: Ensure you have received all necessary vaccinations, such as tetanus, for safety precautions.

  • Hydration: Begin hydrating at least one week before the trip to prepare for the climate.

  • American Hospital: There is an American hospital near the orphanage in case of emergencies. An American doctor is usually available.

  • Medications: Bring all necessary medications for stomach issues, nausea, and other ailments due to food changes.

  • Water Safety: Only consume bottled water, including when brushing your teeth. Avoid using tap water.

  • Hygiene: Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer frequently, especially after interacting with children, as hygiene standards may differ.

3. Accommodation & Packing Guidelines

  • Pack Light: Please pack everything in a backpack. If you need a suitcase, keep it as light as possible or use a carry-on size.

  • Bugs and Climate: Expect bugs in the orphanage and hotels. Bring light jackets or sweaters as the climate can vary depending on altitude.

4. Orphanage Rules

  • Child Interaction: Always ensure that you are with another adult when interacting with the children. Do not be alone in a room with any child.

  • Fair Distribution: If you give something to one child, make sure to give the same to all children around to avoid leaving anyone out.

  • Cultural Awareness: Understand that hygiene among children in Guatemala may differ from what you are used to, so be cautious but compassionate.

5. Cultural Sensitivity

  • Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding is common and culturally accepted. Please refrain from reacting differently if you see it.

  • Cultural Shock: People in rural areas, particularly in the mountains, may not be used to seeing Americans, so expect some curiosity or attention.

  • Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, their homes, or belongings.

6. Food & Water Guidelines

  • Approved Consumption: Only eat food and drink water that has been approved by the mission team. Avoid eating food from local markets.

7. Group Safety & Behavior

  • Travel in Pairs: Do not go anywhere alone. Always have someone with you, especially in busy areas like Guatemala City.

  • Watch for Each Other: Stay alert and look out for one another's safety, particularly in crowded or unfamiliar places.

  • Emergency Contact: In case of an emergency, family members can contact Kyle at 214-886-2995 or via email at kyle@helloewald.com.

8. Behavior Expectations

  • No Promises in Public: Do not make public promises of financial help or other commitments. Always bring such matters to Kyle first.

  • Be Cautious with Interaction: Be mindful that local issues such as alcohol, drugs, abuse, and religious practices may differ from your experiences. Approach these with sensitivity and prayer.

9. Religious & Social Challenges

  • Prayer Focus: Common social challenges in Guatemala include alcohol, drugs, adultery, witchcraft, and suicide. These are areas we should all be praying for during and after the trip.

We appreciate your dedication and commitment to serving the people of Guatemala. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a safe, successful, and impactful mission trip. Thank you for being a part of this journey!
